                                              THINGS TO DO in CABUYA:

TAKE A HIKE: There are several hiking options in Cabuya.

-hike out to Cabuya Island at low tide- Explore the island beaches, views and cemetery.

-Hike Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve. ½ mile from the house, you will find the entrance to the park. You can either hike an hour or so by taking the loop trail, or do the full hike (2 hours each way) through the beautiful rainforest, teaming with plants and wildlife, ending at a pristine beach.

-Hike along the beach. The beach is undeveloped and changes daily with the tides. Walk 20 minutes up the beach to the River Lajas and hike up the river to one of several waterfalls. Walk for an hour and a half (7km) along the beach to Montezuma. You will find a variety of rocky and sandy beaches all along the way.

-Hike the road to Montezuma. An hour and a half (4 miles) will get you into Montezuma. Several openings along the way allow beach access for a quick rest/swim. In Montezuma, enjoy a drink or meal at one of the many funky restaurants.

-Hike the high road over the Cabo Blanco reserve (2 hours, one way, you can cab or bus back) enjoying the amazing views and take a dip at the beach of Mal Pais or Playa Carmen.

-Hike the road from Cabuya to Mal Pais (2-2 ½ hours, one way, you can cab or bus back) This is one of our favorites, it is so lovely, but a bit challenging! It is a 4 mile road that goes over the mountain (some steep terrain). The views are lovely and you are likely to enjoy wildlife.

-Hike the Montezuma waterfall, next to Hotel Cascada. About 30 minutes each way (to the first waterfall). If you like a climbing challenge, you can climb up to the second waterfall as well. This will take another 20 minutes. You can take the bus from Cabuya (10 minute bus ride).

-Hike the Montezuma Beach to Playa Grande and the waterfall. It is a 7 kilometer hike to the waterfall (from Montezuma). Hike part way or all of the way. Several lovely tide pools offer a swim along the way!

TAKE A SWIM: Swim in the lovely warm safe water right in Cabuya at high tide. There are no currents or big waves to worry about. Make sure to bring water shoes as the bottom is rocky. At low tide wade in the tide pools, or walk out to the island and jump off into the deeper water. Find an amazing assortment of shells, stones and sea creatures. Bring your snorkel gear and flippers out to Cabuya Island to see coral and tropical marine life. Swim in the cool pools at the mouth of the river Lajas, only a 20 minute walk along the beach. In front of Cabo Blando Hotel, there is a nice patch of sand to relax on. It is a little before the tide pool at Rio LaJas.

Rent kayaks from the Howler Monkey Hotel, just down the road and kayak around Cabuya Island.

ENJOY THE GREAT LITTLE RESTAURANTS! We have several and they are all very good! Traditional food, sushi, seafood, homemade brick oven pizza, bakery goods and more!

TAKE IT EASY: Swing in a hammock and let the wildlife come to you. Monkeys, birds, iguanas, butterflies and geckos are regular visitors in Cabuya. We have even had a visit from an armadillo. Take your book to the shady water's edge and enjoy the sound of the waves and the tropical breeze. Build a sand castle and go beach combing with the kids. The beach changes regularly with the tide. You will be amazed at the treasures that you will find.

VISIT RAINSONG wildlife sanctuary. The first right AFTER super chicho will take you there, 200 meters up the road to your left. Mary will introduce you to all the fascinating local wildlife.

HORSEBACK RIDING:although there are several options in Montezuma, Cabuya horseback riding is an excellent option. At the corner bar, turn left (if coming from the house) and a few hundred meters up you will see a cute round house on your right. This is where to go for the horseback riding. The horses are gentle, well cared for and well trained.

RENT AN ATV and explore the area. The howler monkey hotel rents an all terrain four wheeler which is great to romp around the area, even over the hill to Mal Pais and Santa Theresa. No great skills are needed!

RENT A BIKE. Gentle Earth Retreats rents bikes by the day or the week. It is a great way to get around and get exercise!

ONCE IN MONTEZUMA, you can rent a surfboard and take lessons, go ZIPLINING in the forest (very fun), go on a snorkeling tour to Tortuga Island, rent an ATV, schedule a fishing tour, go for a horseback riding tour and more! There is an ATM in Montezuma. If you need a bank, you can take the bus from Montezuma to Cobano.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE: hopefully you won’t need it. On Thursdays, the clinic in Cabuya is open for walk ins (between the two markets on the opposite side of the road), other than that, there is a 24 hour emergency room in Cobano.

Cabuya, the gateway to the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, is a small ocean side village which offers a wealth of natural sites to discover. Nestled along the jungle-fringed coast with a backdrop of mountains, Cabuya is great base for hiking, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, beach combing, wildlife watching and all those nature lovers looking for a place off the beaten track. It is also the ideal spot to simply unwind in a hammock and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds you. Cabuya boasts 5 restaurants, an Internet cafe, and two grocery stores which stock alcohol, produce, meat, fish and household items, all of which are within an easy walk from the house. It is also within an hours walk (7km) along the beach to Montezuma and a two and a half hour walk over a mountain to Mal Pais and the lovely playa Carmen. There is a regular bus service to Montezuma so while some visitors choose to rent a car it is certainly not essential
